The Enzyme effect

Enzymes are biological catalysts and control various metabolic functions. They can also be the answer to many health problems. Katya Naidu explores the potential of enzyme therapy for managing various disorders.

All the metabolic activities in the human body can be broken down into thousands of chemical reactions. And all biochemical reactions require biological catalysts called enzymes. Enzymes are the manual workers that build the human body from proteins, carbohydrates and fats. “To say that enzymes are biological catalysts is to belittle the actual role of enzymes in physiological processes in the body. Each physiological action in a cell or tissue is the sum total of enzyme actions within those cells or tissues. The cells control the enzyme activity by sending on (activating) and off (inactivating) signals,” says K G Rajendran, Head-Knowledge Cell, USV.

However, like every activity, the rate of enzyme action in the body goes down with age. Enzyme activity begins to decline somewhere between the ages of sixteen and twenty as the growth peaks. At this time, the rate of tissue reproduction tends to decrease, as what we refer to as aging, begins. Every activity in the body requires replenishing the enzyme supply lost with aging and can restore the body's natural enzyme balance, making enzyme therapy, a significant factor in health management.

In addition, there are diseases, which are caused due to mutation of a gene coding for an enzyme. If a gene coding a particular enzyme is defective (mutated), the enzyme produced from that gene will not be functionally active. The defective enzyme produced by translating this gene is not functional. These are usually genetic defects and the resulting diseases come under 'inborn errors of metabolism.' All these conditions can be effectively treated by enzyme therapy.

Enzyme action

Enzymes have a unique way of action that makes them work as biological response modifiers and anti-inflammatory'. In the conventional anti-inflammatory therapy, non-steroidal drugs called NSAIDs are used. NSAIDs basically work through prostoglandin synthesis pathway. These basically have a lot of side effects, like immune- suppression and gastric bleeding ulceration, if used for a long duration of time. The patients who require anti-inflammatory are usually geriatric or old age patients who would have complications like diabetes and hypertension. NSAIDs would give them an additional burden to fight with. Enzyme therapy, which is fast acting comes to the rescue of situations like this. “Enzymes work in a  natural way and would have a direct relation with the inflammation. It would accelerate the process of inflammation. Thus, if the inflammation process generally takes seven days, enzymes can speed up the process and complete it in about three days,” says Anand Shah, Marketing Head, Bharat Serums.

Compared to the side effects and the risk ratio, enzymes are much safer, equally efficacious and tolerant for long term therapy and could be given to any age group of patients so the old age category is also covered. Enzyme therapy is effective even in patients with a medical history. “Even if the patent is diabetic, has hypertension or a existing gastric problem, this could be safely given. This would not interfere with the secondary problems that are already manifested in the patient,” says Shah.
